MAILBOX MONDAY/IT'S MONDAY WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Mailbox Monday for July being hosted by Mrs Q. Book Addict.

My mailbox for this week has been delightful!

My usual church sale has also got a library. I have not been taking books as I was never sure whether I could return them in the two week period. This last week I thought I'd give them a go and so glad I did.

Two Rosamunde Pilcher books. Both small books which I should be able to finish easily on one of my journeys!

The Borgias like the Tudors are always interesting. Compared to Alexander and Cesare, Lucrezia seems like a walk in the park. Used by her father and brother to further their own ends, Lucrezia adores them both and the ties that bind the three of them are unbreakable.

I saw this author mentioned on Cornflower Books for a review of another book.  Glad I got to this one.

On top of this I bought two books!

Set in colonial Malaya this is my kind of book!

One of three books by Catherine McKenzie which have been on my list - the other two books are Arranged and Forgotton.

It's Monday What Are You Reading? a meme  hosted by Book Journey.

Have read quite a few books this week. I finished Sleeping Tiger, Light on Lucrezia and An Equal Stillness. Now reading Agatha Christie's Black Coffee and hopefully afterwards In the Company of the Courtesan.

My coming week is going to be very eventful. Having a cousin coming over whom we haven't seen for thirty years! she is bringing three of her children - all of them born in the UK and coming out to Sri Lanka for the first time.  I've had this experience before and its always nice to see children's reactions to Sri Lanka!!! It can be quite a culture shock for children born outside Sri Lanka. Parents seem to slide back into their old ways but for children it is not easy.

Everyone have a good week!

  1. Mystica, Jean Plaidy is the only writer I'm familiar with. It was the popular pseudonym of British writer Eleanor Hibbert. I remembered it because a friend of mine was a Plaidy fan though I, myself, haven't read many of her books. She also wrote as Anna Percival and Victoria Holt, the latter still available in used bookstores here, as is Plaidy. This is going down memory lane.

Meanwhile, I hope you have a great time with your cousin and her children. Sri Lanka must be beautiful this time of the year, assuming it's monsoon as it's here.

  2. I really should read another Pilcher novel. I have Spin but haven't found time to read it yet. Soon!
Have a wonderful visit with your cousins.

  3. Pilcher is a wonderful read. So looking forward to your thoughts on The White Pearl - Kate Furnivall is one of my faves. Enjoy your visit with your cousins.

  4. I felt blessed once again when I checked our local library site and found 'The White Pearl'. I was able to request it right away. Thank you!
Reading about your guests, it seems to be the same for all of us...The older generation (meaning us) falls right back in the swing of things but there are always surprised reactions from the younger generation...(What do you mean, there is no shower available? How do you live like this?) The funniest one was observing the kiddies see us putting change in the heating system - albeit years ago - it brought many chuckles to ex-RAF hubby and I!

  5. Hi Mystica - I have been trying to contact you on the email address you left on my blog.
You have won a copy of Good evening Mrs Craven by Mollie Panter Downes. from heavenali.wordpress.
However if you don't contact me in the next 24 hours I am afraid I will have to draw another winner.

  7. The White Pearl looks really good. I am interested in learning more about Malaysia. My grandmother was born there (though the family later moved back to Sri Lanka).

I have Spin but haven't read it yet. I hope you are enjoying Black Coffee. I liked it though it wasn't quite like reading Christie's novels.

I hope you have a wonderful time with your family. I haven't been back to Sri Lanka since I was a baby so I bet it would be quite a culture shock for me too as an adult. :)

  13. The White Pearl looks good. Enjoy your cousin's visit. It's good for children to see other cultures, even if it's shocking at times. It makes them realize the world doesn't revolve around them only.

  18. Hi Mystica,

Rosamund Pilcher has alway been one of my favourite authors, so you should be in for a treat with these two books.

If you do enjoy them, you might want to try reading something by her eldest son, Robin Pilcher. He is a very successful author in his own right and hi books make for some great reading.

Enjoy all your finds this week.

  22. I very much enjoyed Spin. I didn't know about the new Furnival book (I've read 3 of her books) - I hope you enjoy it.

Have a great time with your cousin. It must be odd for her kids to visit a country they have heard so much about but can't quite imagine what it's like.
